The medal is a metallic wreath with a five sided double pointed star laying over it, the portrait in the middle of a circle in the middle of the cross is of Marianne's head (She is a national emblem of France that personifies liberty and reason). The inscription: "Republique Francaise" is inscribed in the middle circle of the star. There is a crown of laurels that joins the cross and the ribbon.
