For the 1983 show, the vegetables that appeared in the first Philadelphia Green exhibit were grown by Lois Burpee, widow of David Burpee, of the Burpee seed company, at her home, Fordhook Farm in Bucks County. Lois Burpee supported PHS urban greening efforts and offered the use of Burpee's greenhouses to grow the vegetables.

With an exhibit titled "Philadelphia Green Street", PHS's Philadelphia Green program had its first ever exhibit at the 1983 Flower Show.

The first year PHS staged an exhibit to showcase Philadelphia Green, its urban gardening program, was 1983. This exhibit featured a typical Philadelphia street of row houses decorated with colorful window boxes, containers made from recycled automobile tires, a corner sitting garden, and a community vegetable garden planted in the vacant lot between the two houses.

The 1985 Philadelphia Green exhibit “Community Gardening : Bigger Than You Think” featured 20-foot long pea pods atop the exhibit.

The 1987 PHS Philadelphia Green exhibit “Iced Tea at Gray’s Ferry” was a playful nod to that year’s Flower Show Central Feature exhibit “Tea at Gray’s Ferry.”

“Garden Treasures, Community Pleasures” was the 1990 PHS Philadelphia Green Flower Show exhibit. Found objects including whimsical tubs and containers and golden wildflowers weaving a “ribbon of gold” constitute some of the garden treasures to be discovered and admired in the over 700 community gardens in Philadelphia.
