In 1970 the Philadelphia Museum of Art staged an exhibit titled Garden Sculpture from the Ingersoll Collection. Featured prominently in this exhibit was Henri Matisse's Large Seated Nude, given to the art museum in 1960 by R. Sturgis and Marion B. G. Ingersoll. The work, created created 1922 - 1929 is a 31 inch tall bronze of one of Matisse's most well known models, Henriette Darricarrere; it is considered to be his most monumental and ambitious sculpture of the 1920s.

Competitors worked against the clock to install their creations in the time allotted -- only two hours -- before the judging began for the 1971 show. Exhibitors had everything they needed: flowers, accessories, tools, and, of course, coffee and conviviality. Part of the glue that holds the Flower Show together is the kibitzing among participants.

With scissors in hand, this exhibitor at the 1972 show studied the niche she was installing. Perhaps she just trimmed a tiny leaf or cut the background fabric so that it fit perfectly into the space. She was contemplating every detail of her design to make sure it was perfect, hoping the judges would award her a blue ribbon.

Judges come from all over the country. They are not paid for their efforts; they consider it an honor to be asked to judge the Philadelphia Flower Show.

Architect Edward Semanko designed the 1972 show, shown here on a scale model. The man leaning over the model is show manager James McCarvill, who, after a career with RCA organizing trade shows, joined the Flower Show in 1966. Together with Ernesta Ballard, McCarvill nurtured the show through its most critical growth period.

Decisions about suppliers, costs, decor, menus, seating, and the logistics of the 1973 Preview Dinner were made by the hardworking Preview Dinner committee. Jean Bodine, chair of the committee, is on the right. Volunteers operating in many capacities have always been and continue to be integral to the success of the Philadelphia Flower Show.

Show organizers wanted to invite a special guest to judge the 1976 show, held in the nation's bicentennial year. They were delighted when Princess Grace of Monaco accepted their invitation. A Philadelphia native, the former Grace Kelly was a practitioner of the floral arts and studied the art of pressed flower compositions with Katie King, a longtime show competitor.

J. Liddon Pennock Jr., (standing) is seen on the floor during set-up for the 1977 show. Known as "Mr. Flower Show," he was active in all areas of its production for more than 50 years. He was mentor to many and friend to all. The 1991 show, with its theme of "Endless Spring," was dedicated to his endless enthusiasm for the Philadelphia Flower Show. (J.
