The 1987 PHS Philadelphia Green exhibit “Iced Tea at Gray’s Ferry” was a playful nod to that year’s Flower Show Central Feature exhibit “Tea at Gray’s Ferry.”

The 1987 Flower Show Preview Dinner was graced with a replica of the original "Grand Federal Edifice," designed by Charles Willson Peale. That edifice was paraded in the Grand Federal Procession in Philadelphia to celebrate the 1787 ratification of the United States Constitution. This was one of several commemorative events held in 1987, the bicentennial year of the ratification of the Constitution.

The 1987 Central Feature "Tea at Grays Ferry" commemorates an historic day, Thursday, July 17, 1787 in the garden of Gray's Ferry Tavern on the banks of the Schuylkill River, where George Washington, Benjamin Franklin, James Madison and Alexander Hamilton took tea. In Philadelphia to construct the country's constitution. This exhibit recreates this 200-year old garden. Rendering by Doug Julian.
