About This Collection

The Lycoming College Collection begins after the accreditation of the Williamsport Dickinson Seminary and Junior College as a four year college. It is a growing collection that chronicles the evolution of this small liberal arts institution, and will include photographs, annuals, catalogs, event programs, alumni newsletters, and promotional material. Student life is represented in publication and information concerning organizations and activities. Continuing in the tradition of the forerunners of the college, a rich musical, theatrical, and artistic environment is documented. Athletics also figure prominently in this collection. An expanding collection of faculty and presidential papers have been contributed, along with records from the libraries, Archival items include assorted artifacts, numerous photographs, and a collection of scrapbooks spanning forty-five years.

Dr. Gabriel and Kellie Cicconi pose for a picture in the archives at the reception for Dr. John F. Piper, Jr., retiring Dean of Lycoming College. Kellie worked together with Dr. Jeffrey D. Newman to study and characterize a new species of Acinetobacter, which was found in Loyalsock Creek in North Central Pennsylvania. She tentatively named it Acinetobacter piperi, in honor or Dr. Piper.

A bell that hung in one of the towers of Old Main is dedicated as a monument on Homecoming Day, November 1949. The bell, which sits on a concrete pedestal at the entrance to the athletic field, originally had been rung to signify athletic victories and to call students to class. After it became cracked in 1943, it was removed from the tower and placed on the campus in front of Old Main. William S. Hoffman, an administrative consultant, suggested that it be placed on the pedestal. Four alumnae participated in the dedication ceremony as special guests. Pictured, left to right, are: Mrs. Sallie Guss Whiteley, Class of 1887; Mrs. Estella Rockwell Seads, Class of 1889; Mrs. Alice Cheston Hicks, Class of 1884; and, Mrs. Eva Faus McKelvey, Class of 1897. Copies of these photos appear in the Lycoming Courier, Oct. 19, 1949.

Daniel Boland, a federal official, hands the keys of the Soldiers and Sailors Memorial Building to Arnold A. Phipps, vice president of the college Board of Directors, as Dr. John long looks on. The building was dedicated to twenty-five war dead and more than four hundred World War II service men and women.
