About This Collection

The Lycoming College Collection begins after the accreditation of the Williamsport Dickinson Seminary and Junior College as a four year college. It is a growing collection that chronicles the evolution of this small liberal arts institution, and will include photographs, annuals, catalogs, event programs, alumni newsletters, and promotional material. Student life is represented in publication and information concerning organizations and activities. Continuing in the tradition of the forerunners of the college, a rich musical, theatrical, and artistic environment is documented. Athletics also figure prominently in this collection. An expanding collection of faculty and presidential papers have been contributed, along with records from the libraries, Archival items include assorted artifacts, numerous photographs, and a collection of scrapbooks spanning forty-five years.

Cast members and state committee of 'Kind Lady' pose for a photo on the stage set. The three-act play, a mystery-comedy, was presented February 26th and 27th, by Frill and Frown, the College's dramatic club. The play, directed by Miss Louise Frownfelter of the college faculty, was the first for the group. Some cast members have been identified by E. Biichle. Seated on the floor in the checked suit is Anna Ruth Sandin. The student to her right, wearing the suit jacket is Esther Rinehuls. In the second row (seated), the last two students are Dorothy Fairchild and Norma Woodford. The three girls in the back, seated in front of the male students are Mary Jane Schreiner, Jeannette Confer, and Frances Toohey. Charlene and Robert Shangraw pose beside the Charlene Shangraw Gate. The gate was a birthday present to Mrs. Shangraw from her husband, and was presented to her at a surprise party at Admissions House. It stands next to Williams Hall and across from Admissions House, on the corner of Washington Boulevard and College Place. The plaque reads:'Dedicated to Charlene Shangraw, Loving Wife and Mother and Friend of Lycoming College.' Mrs. Shangraw's husband, Robert L. Shangraw, served on the College's Board of Trustees and was chairman of the Board for several years.
