About This Collection

Transcripts of reports of shipwrecks and casualties recorded at the Port of Philadelphia. Information provided is date and time of shipwreck, name and nationality of vessel, type of construction, tonnage, age of vessel, port where registered, registration number, name of master, name of owner, port from whence last departed, where bound, number of passengers, number of crew, and number of persons lost. Also given are the value of the vessel and of the cargo, type of cargo, whether vessel was carrying a deck load or was over weight, the weight of the cargo, and the estimated value of the vessel and cargo. Finally, the location where the accident occurred, nature of the accident, cause of the accident, force of the wind at the time, weather conditions, measures taken to avoid the accident, and any remarks are noted. Images are arranged chronologically by date of report. This collection is part of the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission which was created in 1945.
