About This Collection
The Bureau is responsible for the planning, development, implementation, coordination, and evaluation programs designed to reclaim abandoned mine sites, control, and extinguish underground mine and refuse bank fires, assist in abating acid mine drainage, control subsidence hazards, and respond to emergency situations involving abandoned mines throughout the Commonwealth. It is headquartered in Harrisburg, with district offices in Wilkes-Barre and Ebensburg.The collection contains drawings and contracts for projects to rehabilitate and clean up portions of the former Schuylkill Navigation Company canal basin and the adjacent Schuylkill River. Most of the drawings relate to the construction of water management systems, aqueducts, dams and canal basins as well as older Schuylkill Navigation Company canal engineering records no longer extant.
