Sportsman Advisory Councils (PA) Files, 1996-2003

About This Collection

The Department of Conservation and Natural Resources (DCNR) was created by Act 1995-18 which took effect July 1, 1995 and divided the functions of the abolished Department of Environmental Resources (DER) between DCNR and the newly created Department of Environmental Protection (DEP). The department is charged with maintaining and preserving the commonwealth's 117 state parks; managing the 2.1 million acres of state forest land; providing information on the state's ecological and geologic resources; and establishing community conservation partnerships with grants and technical assistance to benefit rivers, trails, greenways, local parks and recreation, regional heritage parks, open space and natural areas. In June 1996, the Bureau of Recreation and Conservation was transferred to DCNR from the Department of Community Affairs upon that department's abolition. This collection contains files relative to the Governor's Sportsman Advisory Council and Governor's Youth Sportsmen Advisory Council. These groups were created by the Governor's Office, and reported directly to the Governor on concerns affecting sportsmen in the state, most notably hunting and fishing issues. Included are agendas and meeting minutes of the Governor's Youth Sportsmen Advisory Council for the years 2002 and 2003; year-end reports of the Governor's Sportsman Advisory Council, 1996-1998; reading files of both Councils, 2001-2003, which include articles, correspondence, legislation, meeting minutes, etc.; and the personal files of the first executive director of the Governor's Sportsman Advisory Council, Vern Ross, 1996-1999.
