About This Collection

Mine accident registers providing documentation on mining accidents for the numerous Anthracite Coal Districts. Information provided within each report includes name of the inspector, name of mine, name of the injured miner, mine district number, date of the accident, cause of accident, whether fatal, whether the accident occurred inside or outside the mine, citizenship status, nationality, job classification, marital status, and the number of children. Images are indexed alphabetically by Accident Victims, 1899-1918, 1924-1972 and then arranged numerically by district, and thereunder chronologically by date of report. This collection is part of the Department of Mines and Mineral Industries whose objectives include: protecting coal miners from unsafe working conditions, enforcing the anthracite and bituminous coal mining laws of the Commonwealth, inspecting mines and collieries, investigating serious accidents, and supervision of the examination and certification of applicants for certain mining jobs.
