Port of Philadelphia Records: Records of the Wardens of the Port, 1776-1809

About This Collection

Accounts of the Wardens in charge of the port of Philadelphia including balance sheets detailing expenditures. The balance sheets were from officials under the wardens and were used when the warden balanced accounts with the Comptroller General. Entries on these balance sheets might include a brief description of work performed, the names of laborers, amount paid, and the date on which work was performed. On some balance sheets, cash voucher numbers are given. Corresponding receipts and vouchers are also included in this series. The names of those who were Wardens of the port are provided. Additionally, there are several folders relating to the maintenance of lighthouses around the port and the state sloop Delaware. Images are unarranged. This collection is part of the Office of the Comptroller General which was created in 1782.
