Port of Philadelphia Records: Records of the Health Office, 1783-1798

About This Collection

This collection documents transactions between the Marine Hospital and the Health Office. Entries include ship's names, date of entry into port, the number of sick passengers, the amount paid to the hospital, and the port of origin. Also included are the accounts and receipts for expenditures of the hospital which contain such information as date of purchase and the name of the merchant, goods and supplies bought, and the names of laborers. There are also reports of the committee overseeing the Health Office. Additionally, accounts for 1794-1798 divide the Health Office into its various departments and list expenditures of these departments. This collection is part of the Office of the Comptroller General which was created in 1782.
