Militia Exemption Books (PA) 1801-1813

About This Collection

This series provides information about men exempt from militia duty. Data provided for each regiment includes the number of the regiment, the county to which it belonged, the captains in the regiment, the number exempt according to class, and the total number exempt in each regiment. Also included are accounts of exempt fines which are listed according to county, and lists of exempted men by county. The names or numbers of the militia units in which men served is also given. Images are grouped chronologically by years which exemptions were accounted for. This collection is part of the Office of the Comptroller General which was created in 1782.
