About This Collection

This collection contains collection of correspondence, broadsides, and papers dealing with issues during Hartranft's two-term governorship. Among the subjects addressed are the 1876 Centennial Commission, the bill to remove the Confederate dead from Gettysburg, the Berlin Mission, the Peter F. Rothermel painting of the Battle of Gettysburg, the Western and Eastern State Penitentiary, the 1877 Railroad Riots, the Molly Maguires, and other labor related issues. Governor Hartranft's 1873 Inaugural Address is also included. Images are arranged chronologically by date of correspondence. This collection is part of the Office of the Governor which has since the Constitution of 1790 placed supreme executive power in the Office of the Governor.
