Korean War Compensation Application Batch Sheets (Roll 7169)

Department of Military and Veterans’ Affairs, Bureau for Veterans Affairs, Korean War Compensation Application Batch Sheets, Batch Numbers 30000-40199, This Digital Object is provided in a collection that is included in POWER LIBRARY: Pennsylvania Photos and Documents, which is funded by the Office of Commonwealth Libraries of Pennsylvania/Pennsylvania Department of Education., These records are grouped in batches by date of processing; to use them, you will need the service number of the solider. First, open the Korean War Bonus Application Index (PDF file) and search by the soldier’s service number (organized numerically). You will find the batch number to the right, directly next to the individual’s service number. Once you have the batch number, find the correct roll of microfilm containing your batch number. Navigate to the batch sheet and look for the batch number, followed by the soldier’s service number, and name (last name, First initial, possibly middle initial). In the first column, you will see the soldier’s months of domestic service, followed by a column with foreign service (if any) and then a column listing the total months of service. Total compensation paid is listed in the last column. Soldiers were paid 10 dollars per month for domestic service and 15 dollars per month for foreign service. Please keep in mind some soldiers were paid for service even after the war ended. These records provide a listing of those who were recipients of the Korean War bonus, and therefore a listing of Pennsylvanians who served in the Korean War. While they are the most complete records of Korean War veterans in the Pennsylvania State Archives, they are not fully inclusive as some veterans may not have applied for the bonus. They provide the veterans name, service number, number of months of domestic and foreign service, and occasionally the home address of the recipient. The original bonus files no longer exist. The arrangement of these records is complex, and if you have any trouble using them, please contact the Pennsylvania State Archives for assistance.
