Franklin, Benjamin, 1706-1790 -- Freemasonry, Freemasons -- Pennsylvania, Freemasons -- Grand Lodge of Pennsylvania
Sketch of Benjamin Franklin's career as a mason that was written for the celebration of Franklin's bicentennial. Includes facsimiles from original manuscript sources and lengthy quotations from published accounts and documents relating to Franklin's involvement with freemasonry.
The text, however, does point out that "for some reason, Franklin in his writings and correspondence is singularly silent upon the subject of Freemasonry .... There is not a word about his Masonic life to be found in his Autobiography, or in any of his other letters that have come down to us; almost every other subject is touched upon in his voluminous correspondence except such as relate to the Craft." (page 105)
Includes detailed account of a Masonic memorial service held for Franklin at his grave on 19 April 1906.
Camp William Penn (La Mott, Pa.), La Mott (Pa.) -- History., Generals -- United States -- Biography., Bankers -- United States -- Biography., Wagner, Louis, 1838-1914.
"He was born in Germany on August 4, 1838 and came to Philadelphia when he was ten years old. At the outbreak of the Civil War he enlisted in the eighty-eighth Pennsylvania Volunteers as a first lieutenant. His promotion was rapid and by the close of the war he was raised to the rank of major-general. He participated in the battles of Cedar Mountain, Rappahannock River, Rappahannock Station, Thoroughfare Gap, Groveton-Gainesville and the Second Battle of Bull Run. It was here he received a wound that caused permanent disability. Despite this he returned to fight in the Chancellorsville campaign. It was too much and he was relieved of further of further field duty. Instead of taking a discharge he requested to be placed in command of Camp William Penn. His troublesome wound often made it impossible to walk and he had himself lifted in to the saddle to drill the new recruits. After the war he was active in the G.A.R. and served as commander-in-chief of the Grand Army of the Republic. Wagner Junior High School in Philadelphia was named in his honor. Some of his descendants are still living in Cheltenham Township." - Alexander Scott

In 1833 she assisted in the formation of the American Anti-Slavery Convention and after moving to Cheltenham her house was a station in the underground railroad. When Camp William Penn was built, only a few hundred yards from her house, she became a regular visitor to the training camp where she assisted in the chaplain work among black troops." - Alexander Scott
