About This Collection

This collection is comprised of photographic images documenting designed landscapes both private and public in and around Philadelphia. Digitized materials include early-twentieth century views of private, public, and corporate gardens documented in the collection of the Society of Little Gardens of Philadelphia. In addition, the PHS Collection Portfolios document the activities the Rittenhouse Square Flower Market as well as materials connected to the School Gardens Movement in Philadelphia through the Perla A. Matthews photograph collection. Included are photographs taken by noted Canadian photographer Clara Sipprell (1885-1975) and Philadelphia photographer, Ida W. Pritchett of the Alba B. Johnson estate “Castana,” in Rosemont, Pennsylvania. In addition, are the images of Edge Hill, the estate of Samuel W. Morris that depict the gardens designed by landscape architect Ellen Biddle Shipman (1869-1950) and photographed by "Mrs. Gillingham" [Mrs. C. Stratton Howe Gillingham] and Mattie Edwards Hewitt (1869-1956). This digital project is supported in part by a grant from the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission.

This collection consists of 25 photographs by noted photographers Ida W. Pritchett and Clara E. Sipprell of the gardens and grounds of the Alba B. Johnson estate, Castaña in Rosemont, Pennsylvania.

Album consists of photographs of gardens and exterior views of the Morris home known as Edge Hill. The Edge Hill gardens were designed by landscape architect Ellen Shipman and photographed by "Mrs. Gillingham" [Mrs. C. Stratton Howe Gillingham] and Mattie Edwards Hewitt (1869-1956). Photographs numbered 1-18 are attributed to "Mrs. Gillingham" and those numbered 19-25 were taken by Mattie Edwards Hewitt

The Perla A. Matthews Photograph Album comprises 62 photographic prints chiefly documenting the activities of the Edgar Allan Poe School Garden. Images include views of the Edgar Allan Poe School (erected between 1913 and 1914) located at 21st and Ritner Streets, the establishment of the school garden and structures at 22nd and Ritner on grounds on which stands the Clark, Thomas, and Co. Furniture Factory, the teachers and students at work, harvest photographs, and students and teachers on excursions, for example, what appears to be a student trip to the Fairmount Water Works. Additional photographs may be of other as yet unidentified Philadelphia school and home gardens

This collection consists of photographic materials connected to the Rittenhouse Square Flower Market. The Market founded by Mrs. George Gordon Meade Large debuted on May 20, 1914 and drew its inspiration from Mrs. Large's visit to the Paris Flower Market in the Place de la Madeleine. The Market was envisioned as a charity event and the 1914 event raised The first Flower Market $1,250 each for The Children's Hospital, the Hope Day Nursery, and the Rittenhouse Square Improvement Association

The collection includes residential gardens and gardens of the Philadelphia Contributionship, Women's City Club, Philadelphia Art Alliance, the Mutual Assurance Company, the Print Club of Philadelphia, Girard College and the Roof Reading Room of the Main Branch of Free Library of Philadelphia. In addition, there are photographs of the gardens of Old Christ Church and the Unitarian Church on Chestnut and Van Pelt Streets, as well as the Swann Memorial Fountain on Logan Circle and views of Rittenhouse Square
