The first year in the new venue came with a surprise. Part of the central feature was a replica of the 1876 Centennial Pool in Fairmount Park.  Upon installation it was necessary to reduce the pool by ten feet in length to allow enough space between the pool and the entrance doors for people to enter comfortably. Re-sizing the pool was easy; redesigning the elaborate bedding plant garden around it was more challenging.

This lovely backyard retreat titled "Simple Things" won J. Cugliotta Landscape/Nursery Inc. the 1996 Best Achievement Award in the landscape category as well as the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society Council Trophy. The judges found “the large trees remarkably forced.” J. Cugliotta exhibited at the show for more than twenty years.

As part of the Central Feature of the 1996 show, floral designers Elverston Jordan teamed with sculptor Charles A. Szoradi to create a Liberty Bell Fountain exhibit. It was a fantasy interpretation of Philadelphia’s famous bell, using plants, a neon-lit sculpture, and a fountain.

The 1996 show highlighted several of America’s firsts that had their origins in Philadelphia, including the Philadelphia Zoo. Show officials were thrilled to be able to borrow the zoo’s Wilhelm Wolff sculpture, Dying Lioness. This massive bronze work was first shown at the 1876 Centennial and normally stands guard at the zoo entrance. A convention center worker made sure this 5-foot-9-inch treasure was firmly in place.

The Altar Guild of the Washington National Cathedral exhibited several times and was very popular with visitors. Guild designs were often sculptural as well as spiritual in their interpretation. This 1996 exhibit, Divine Inspiration, captured the remarkable ambiance of the guild’s heavenly arrangements against the backdrop of the Cathedral’s gothic architecture. The Altar Guild exhibited in 1996, 1998, and 2005.

The move from the Civic Center to the Pennsylvania Convention Center in 1996 meant an increase of exhibition hall space from six acres to ten. Aisles at the Civic Center were 20 feet wide; the new space allowed for aisle space of up to 45 feet. Ceiling height increased to 55 feet, a great improvement over the 27-foot-high Civic Center ceiling.

A big change came in 1996, when the Philadelphia Flower Show moved to the new Pennsylvania Convention Center in downtown Philadelphia after 30 years at the Civic Center. The Pennsylvania Convention Center covered 33 acres, and auxiliary space included rooms for culinary and flower arranging events. Show visitors had all of Philadelphia’s amenities within walking distance. The show finally had a stage befitting its grandeur.
