Philadelphia floral designer Jaime Rothstein created a replica of the Hall of Mirrors at Versailles in her 1998 exhibit. Only the topiary and sixteen-foot-high arrangements were real; the set was “faux finished” to imitate marble. That year, after the show closed to visitors, Jaime married her husband here in a ceremony witnessed by 300 guests.

At the 1998 show, Elizabeth Farley, left, and Irene Slater consulted reference books to ensure that plant names submitted with entries were accurate and in agreement with current taxonomic practices. Every year thousands of show visitors study the plants and want to learn where to buy and how to grow them. Ensuring that visitors have accurate information is part of PHS’s insistence on high standards for the show.

With the theme   “La Passion du Jardin” (the passion of the garden) the 1998 show celebrated gardening with a French flair. Show designer Ed Lindemann worked closely with the Chateau Villandry, known for   its famous kitchen gardens, the Henri Delbard Company, breeder of French roses, and La Varenne cooking school in Burgundy, France, to create several authentic Gallic settings for the central feature displays

The 1998 Philadelphia Museum of Art Flower Show exhibit recreated Philadelphia’s Rodin Museum, including its formal French garden and reflecting pool, as it appeared in 1929, based on an original three-dimensional model made for the museum’s architects, Paul Cret and Jacques Gréber.

The 1998 show had a French theme, and Michael Petrie, designer at J. Franklin Styer Nurseries, created his Tooleries exhibit,  a playful reference to the Tuileries garden in Paris. It featured 500 painted garden tools in a rose garden, with a rake and shovel sculpture placed at the top of a reflecting pool. Petrie continues to exhibit under his own business, Handmade Gardens.
