Pennsylvania Horticultural Society - Philadelphia Flower Show

Cecily Clark won the Edith Wilder Scott Award, given to the best of the blues in the show’s horticulture division, a record four times. Perhaps more remarkably, she had not missed exhibiting in a show from 1945 until her last show in 2011. A mentor to countless neophytes, Clark generously shared her knowledge and enthusiasm for growing traffic-stopping entries at the show.

J. Franklin Styer Nurseries, Inc. 1997 exhibit is titled “Tyers by Styers” and challenges the Show visitor with the question “What can a garden be?” and exhorts us to expand our definition of the garden, to seek alternatives, new influences and sensibilities.

The 1997 Flower show exhibit by Robertson’s Flowers of Chestnut his was a playful interpretation of that year’s theme, “The Great Exchange – People, Places, and Plants.” Visitors were invited to observe a birthday party celebration for Benjamin Franklin, one of Philadelphia’s most famous citizens, as though he had been at the show all along. The party’s “guest list” included notable figures from throughout the centuries.
