Pennsylvania Horticultural Society - Philadelphia Flower Show

Im Wha Kong, the state flower arranger for South Korea, is making preparations for her display on Korean flower arranging at the 1994 Flower Show. Beginning in the late 1980s, Mrs. Im exhibited for several years, traveling at her own expense and bringing her beautiful hand-made pottery to incorporate into her creations.

In a nod to the 1994 Flower Show theme “Islands in the Sun” the PHS Philadelphia Green exhibit is “Urban Islands in the Sun” where the “islands” are planted by hundreds of exuberant community gardeners who participate in PHS’s community greening and public landscape efforts across the city.

A smiling John Swan congratulated a winner at the 1994 awards luncheon, while Rosemarie Vassalluzzo showed her trophy to an admirer. Rosemarie won the Grand Sweepstakes an astonishing 14 times in her 30-year career. This award is given to the competitor who accumulates the most points in both the artistic and horticulture classes.

Stoney Bank Nurseries won a silver trophy for the Sand Castle exhibit in 1994. Show visitors were invited to look through this charming dolphin garden gate into a seaside garden. While the exhibit evoked sensations of warmth and sunshine, with its sand dunes, ornamental grasses, and perennials, preparing the display was agony; the winter of 1994 was an especially frigid one with power losses from severe ice storms. Jack Blandy, Stoney Bank owner, waited in line for hours for kerosene in order to keep his greenhouse at a temperature of 50 degrees, a mere eight degrees above the danger zone for his plants.
