Flower shows -- Pennsylvania -- Philadelphia, Gale Nurseries, Philadelphia Flower Show (1985 : Philadelphia, Pa.), Pennsylvania Horticultural Society, Renderings (Drawings), Julian, Doug
1985 Gale Exhibit Artist Rendering: Central feature "Our Garden Heritage" in 1985 show theme: "A Touch of Britain." This artist's rendering shows how visitors will walk through the central feature, beginning in the knot garden, made of dwarf English boxwood, pink and white begonias and blue ageratum. It is surrounded by stone balustrades and features four sculptures representing the four seasons. The visitor then walks under arches to explore the perennial border made of 61 varieties of perennials, biennials and annuals, including pink, blue and white delphiniums, snapdragons and foxglove. Pillars of Rhonda and Golden Shower roses rise above a crop of peachy-pink Sonia roses inside a border of Callery pear trees. Rendering by Doug Julian.

Chuck Gale, from left; Jane Pepper, PHS president and show manager; Ed Lindemann, show designer; and Charlie Gale are seen here in the Gale Nurseries greenhouses examining plants for the 1985 British-themed central feature. The Gales first created a rendering to show how visitors would walk through their exhibit, consisting of a knot garden; 61 varieties of perennials, biennials and annuals; and a rose garden. Planning for the growing and forcing of the plants is complex; some plants are sown as early as two years before their exhibit debut.
