About This Collection

The Harmonists, a Christian Communal society, founded Old Economy Village in 1824. They were known for their piety, as well as for their economic successes in textile manufacturing, including silk production, and later in the oil and railroad industries. Old Economy Village in Ambridge, PA is the home of a great deal of information about the Harmony Society and life in general in the nineteenth century. This is a photograph of children of Economite residents taking "communion" at the Old Economy Lutheran Church. Written on back (by Lloyd Paxton): I judge the girl on the right who was my mother to be ten years of age in the photograph, thus the 1900 year (born 1890) died 1973. She was the daughter (youngest) of Caroline Wofanel (Miller) was Katherine Louise Miller (Paxton) (Burlew). The boy on the right was Caroline's youngest son Henry Miller. (other children and preacher not identified)
