About This Collection

The Harmonists, a Christian Communal society, founded Old Economy Village in 1824. They were known for their piety, as well as for their economic successes in textile manufacturing, including silk production, and later in the oil and railroad industries. Old Economy Village in Ambridge, PA is the home of a great deal of information about the Harmony Society and life in general in the nineteenth century. Major topics covered by the archives and library include music, architecture, religion, business, photographs, and more.

Show unidentified man and woman looking at lamps on a red table. There is a painted backdrop of store shelves. Woman is wearing a costume similar to those used in Man's Reach. On back: Country store 1850 now being restored by Junior League Pgh to look like this. It is not at present in shape to be photographed as shelves are in process of being built. Lamps and lanterns you see of 19th Cen. design are actually now in production at Old Economy and on sale in the Gift Shop in the self sustaining manner of the Harmonists.

This photo from Winterhur was the basis for the blue (Shaker) window shade for OEV (restore but it had no remaining fabric to Reproduce. He asked Winterhur for an example. This photograph cannot be used for publication purposes. C to R.V.S.) Stotz had found a period roller shade roller in the George Rapp House attic. Contact Winterthur Museum for more assistance.
