Foundries
The 1855 Brown Brothers Foundry (later site of Struthers-Wells) on Pennsylvania Avenue West at the Pennsylvania Railroad crossing. This frame building stood where the remaining Struthers brick shops now (2004) house the Moldsmiths plastics firm. The photo probably dates to 1860 or slightly later.
Buildings
Among the earliest photos taken in Warren is this 1860 view of the Carver House, built in 1849, and right, the Tanner business block. The site is the intersection of Hickory Street with Pennsylvania Avenue.
Hotels, Churches, Streets
Carver House hotel and the 400 block of Pennsylvania Avenue, circa 1880. At the end of the block is the steeple of the original Trinity Episcopal church. The Hall block (three stories) is at left center.
Dwellings
Charles W. Rathbun house at the northeast corner of East Street and Pennsylvania Avenue. Dr. Elizabeth Beaty constructed her brick home (still standing) on this site, ca 1917. The porch columns from the Rathbun house were later used on a house on Prospect Street, but replaced (ca 1990) with inappropriate substitutes.
Banks, Buildings
The Citizens National Bank building at the northeast corner of Hickory Street and Pennsylvania Avenue ca 1900. Built in 1888 it is now (2004) occupied by Community Consumer Discount Company and other commercial tenants.
Fires, Construction workers, Railroads
The burned-out sections of Clarendon, under reconstruction, 10 days after the great fire of July 4, 1887. A view west from near the Philadelphia & Erie railroad depot.
Fires, Construction, Railroads
A view south over the burned district in Clarendon after the fire of July 4 and 5, 1887. At extreme upper left is the depot of the Philadelphia & Erie railroad on which materials were shipped in for reconstruction.
War, Soldiers, Railroads
A Western New York & Pennsylvania Railroad coach holding soldiers bound for service in the Spanish-American War and a crowd of well-wishers in the west end yard of the Pennsylvania Railroad, 1898.
Parades and processions, People
Col. David Gardner, Marshall of Memorial Day Parade, in G.A.R. uniform. Building in rear is at southeast corner of Liberty Street and Third Avenue; built by Ebenezer Jackson and later called the Sill House. It has been home to numerous offices and businesses, notably the Newell Press and West Penn Oil Company. The photo probably dates to 1910-1915.
Dedications, Bridges, Monuments
Dedication of the Company I temple on November 11, 1922, erected in memory of the first 13 Warren County men who lost their lives in World War I. Note Soldiers and Sailors Monument east of the Hickory Street Bridge.
Streets, Schools
Looking up Conewango Avenue from Pennsylvania Avenue about 1890. In the center distance is the Jefferson Street School's bell tower.
Rivers, Buildings
Junction of Conewango Creek and Allegheny River, probably 1916 or 1917.
Churches, Bridges, Rivers, Dams
Old wooden dam on the Conewango Creek (just below Beaty Junior High School, where concrete dam is now) circa 1910. The church at left is the 1911 St. Paul's Lutheran which burned in 1915 and was immediately replaced by a new structure sold to the Warren Players as a theatre in 1971. It is now (2004) privately owned and being rehabilitated for use as a house. Beyond, upstream, is the Third Avenue bridge.
Swing bridges, Oil well drilling rigs, Streams
Looking up the Conewango from below Jefferson Avenue, showing original Third Avenue swinging (foot) bridge and original wooden Fifth Avenue bridge, about 1878. Both bridges were taken out by ice in 1883. Note oil well on west side of creek below Fifth.
millrace, Stores and shops
The southeast corner of Pennsylvania Avenue ( then 440 Water Street) and Liberty Street, in 1899 the site of the bridge across the millrace at Liberty (across the race is part of the Piso building). Shops in the two wooden buildings are left, Kirberger's wagon shop, and Spinner hardware.
Schools, Streets, Buildings, millrace
Central and Union schools, northeast corner of Third Avenue and Hickory Street, circa 1890. Central, at left, was added in 1871 to the older Union building, built in 1854 and razed in 1900. Central was home to high school students until construction of Warren High School in 1897 but continued in use as an elementary school until razed in 1936 to make way for a new municipal building.
Hotels, Buildings
The Cornplanter Hotel in Irvine, Pennsylvania (razed in 1920) opened in 1841. It was one of many stone structures erected by Dr. William Irvine in the village bearing his name. Stone from the hotel, which stood just east of the Brokenstraw Creek on old route 6, was used by Hugh Siggins to build an addition to an old farmhouse in Sugar Grove, Pennsylvania, about 1950.
People, Politicians, Courthouse
Unidentified subject (political gathering? teachers' institute? county school directors?) ca 1890 at the courthouse. Homer M. Putnam stands at top left, Col. Lewis Finley Watson (white beard) is front row left, and Caleb C. Thompson is center in long black coat.
Covered bridges
The Russell covered bridge (third on the same site) built in 1853 and razed in 1937, replaced by an iron bridge still in use in 2004. Photo probably circa 1930 or slightly later.
