About This Collection

The Summerville, Pennsylvania Story Project is a collection of documents, photos, and other memorabilia intended to present the human side of Summerville. The collection material dates from the occupancy by Native American tribes to the founding of Troy (later named Summerville) through growth and decline to the present day. Presented in the form of stories, vignettes, and anecdotes, we hope to communicate the warm feelings we have for our town and introduce her to others around the globe.

These men drove the main heading in #2 mine through the hill. It came out on the hillside, on Corsica Road, above Reed Wolfgong’s house. The early plan of the company was to build a trestle across the valley, and put an entrance on the Harold (Lefty) Smith farm.

Photo: Mules from #6 and #10 mines were kept in these barns. We think the two mule drivers were, Wade Haugh and Clude Conklin, Sr. At left of picture, William Wampler was mule boss. On Sunday afternoons, Bill Plyler was mine foreman and allowed his son Darrell and friends to ride the mules.
