New Cumberland Public Library - Scrapbooks and Memorabilia

Scrapbook compiled by Gerald Brinton, a 1936 graduate of New Cumberland High School who received a bachelor's degree in Education at Shippensburg Teachers College and later became a teacher in the New Cumberland/West Shore school districts. Memorabilia includes programs from NC High and Shippensburg school events and a copy of the July 25, 1940 Freetown (Sierre Leone) Daily Guardian.

Part 2. From the scrapbook: The Branch United States Disciplinary Barracks, New Cumberland, Pennsylvania, was activated 15 June 1945 under provisions of War Department Circular #176, 1945....This installation serves as the confinement facility for all prisoners sentenced to punitive type discharges and confinement in a Disciplinary Barracks with at least six (6) months remaining to serve upon arrival, from the First, Second and Third Army areas and the Air Force units located in those same areas.

From the scrapbook: "IN THE FOLLOWING PAGES you will find a picture story of the people, buildings, and affairs connected with the dedication and open house at Farm Bureau Insurance Company's Harrisburg, Pennsylvania building." Events covered include the Press and Radio Dinner Party (September 15, 1952), Sponsor's Day (September 16), Community Day (September 17), Dedication ceremonies (September 18), and Open House (September 19 and 20). From the collection of Roland N. Benjamin, an executive with the Farm Bureau Co-operative Association and resident of New Cumberland (Pa.).

Scrapbook of statistics and newspaper articles about the West Shore Twilight Baseball League, covering approximately 1922 to 1947. Teams involved with the league included variously: New Cumberland, Dillsburg, West Fairview, Enola, Carlisle, Post 1462, Army Depot, Camp Hill, Wormleysburg, White Hill, Shiremanstown, and Mechanicsburg. The scrapbook and notes were compiled by Harper Sunday, who played on the New Cumberland team for a number of years in the late 1930s and early 1940s.
