About This Collection

The Meyersdale Public Library photograph collections contain approximately 2,000 photographs. From the total collection, about 320 will be selected for digitization based on the selection criteria. The photographs that will be selected for online display are significant because they provide a broad overview of life immediately before, during, and after the Progressive Era in the Allegheny Mountains region (mostly Somerset Co., PA & northern Maryland). The photographs capture families & individuals both in portraits and in natural settings, military men, coal mines, mills, railroads, transportation, education, and African American families. Our photographs have been used in Somerset Magazine and in the book "Allegheny Passage Companion, Guide to History & Heritage Along the Trail" by Bill Metzger. Accessibility to the collection will be enhanced because the images will be searchable online. Currently the photographs are accessioned on paper but are not included in our library catalog. Digitization would allow users easy & free access to historical photographs that would otherwise essentially be hidden in a closet.

The children of the Garrett school are standing with their arms crossed, not looking happy to have their picture taken. Transcribed from a note filed with the picture 'This picture was taken in 1897 in front of Garrett's old schoolhouse. (two-story frame; four rooms) located on site of present bldg. Represents first room (lower grades), teacher in upper left Margaret Lee Baer, still living in Meyersdale, Pa. (RFD). About 51 children and their teacher gather in front of their large schoolhouse doors for a class photo. Some boys in dark pants and light or dark shirts sit crossed legged in the front row. Boys and girls of all sizes and ages stand behind them with the teacher. The girls are in a variety of knee length dresses with dark stockings and high top laced shoes. The girls are wearing long dresses and some are plaid, white, or dark, with high top laced shoes. The boys are in a variety of suits, dark pants with white shirts, or dark pants with dark shirts. This is the Meyersdale High School in 1907. It was a two story building with a basement. There is a pointed roof on the turret, and the small structure on the front is the bell tower. A large gathering is at the entrance of the High School in Somerset. Older children are in the back by the doors, and smaller children are lined in a neat row in front, with adults on either end. The building has two stories, a basement, and attic dormers. The second story has large windows and an indented section that sits above a balcony. Four large chimneys are on the rooftop. The next rows have boys and girls who are wearing an assortment of buttoned up jackets, plaid dresses, shirts with no jackets, and hats. The M.H.S. faculty includes a very happy young lady in a white dress, who bends her knees and clasps her hands in laughter. There is a row of five people behind her. The gentleman on the viewer’s left has a light colored suit and white shirt, and is holding books. Next to him is a woman with a light colored skirt and white blouse, followed by a lady in a dark skirt and white blouse. One-room schools, Schools
A well-worn dirt road leads to the one-room schoolhouse. The three windows are boarded up, and there is only one entrance door. Three of the panes in the attic window appear to be missing. On either side of the schoolhouse stand buildings; possibly outhouses or sheds.
