About This Collection

The Meyersdale Public Library photograph collections contain approximately 2,000 photographs. From the total collection, about 320 will be selected for digitization based on the selection criteria. The photographs that will be selected for online display are significant because they provide a broad overview of life immediately before, during, and after the Progressive Era in the Allegheny Mountains region (mostly Somerset Co., PA & northern Maryland). The photographs capture families & individuals both in portraits and in natural settings, military men, coal mines, mills, railroads, transportation, education, and African American families. Our photographs have been used in Somerset Magazine and in the book "Allegheny Passage Companion, Guide to History & Heritage Along the Trail" by Bill Metzger. Accessibility to the collection will be enhanced because the images will be searchable online. Currently the photographs are accessioned on paper but are not included in our library catalog. Digitization would allow users easy & free access to historical photographs that would otherwise essentially be hidden in a closet.

Casselman River, Rivers, Saylor Hill, United States-Pennsylvania-Meyersdale, Houses
The distinct shape of Saylor Hill can be seen above the Casselman River. Homes were built at different levels on Saylor Hill, and roads wound up around the hill. 5 3/8 x 3 3/8 in. color postcard.

The Truxal house has three stories. The second floor has a rounded center with three windows. On the third floor, there is a rounded section with three windows and a turret. Along the side of the house, a chimney with a sectioned top rises high above the house. In an ankle length two piece outfit and high heeled shoes, Frances smiles happily while she stands by the rosebush. Behind her is a large two story brick house with a second story porch. She is wearing a white ankle length skirt and a dark top with a white belt and white collar. This building has a turret on the viewer’s left side, is three stories high, and has three dormers on the roof of the third floor. The second floor shows a rounded room with windows. The first floor porch is the width of the house, with a wide set of stairs extending from the porch. A horse and rider trot down the dirt road. Rowe House (previously Truxal House). Eight people gathered in the yard of a three story white house. The young boy in a dark suit decided to stand by the picket fence. A younger boy in knickerbockers and a light jacket stood by the mailbox. Behind the mailbox was a tall boy in a dark suit with a dark shirt. In front of him was a small girl in a white knee length dress, holding her hand. In front, a tiny child in a white dress was being supported by a young girl in a dark dress. A lady in a dark skirt and white top with a ribbon around her neck stood to the tall boy’s left. The lady in a long dark skirt and top decorated with buttons moved slightly away from the rest, and stood by the picket fence. 8 1/2 x 6 3/8 in. black and white photograph.

On the left side of Jackson Street in Garrett, Pa. is a partial sign on a small shack that reads ‘The National Stock Co.' Next door is a barber shop. A large building is past the next house. On the viewer’s right side of the dirt road is a wooden house, and on the telephone pole in front is a ‘Hoke's Scrap’ sign. Past a small shack is a two story building with a second story porch. A young boy leans against the porch wall, and a small girl watches him. A lady in a white dress is crossing the street. The railroad tracks run perpendicular to the street. A two story house with a small addition is seen on the viewer’s right. It is partially hidden by trees or bushes that were knocked down in a storm. The home on the left sits slightly in front of the other, and is a single story home, with a front porch that extends around to the right side of the house.
