About This Collection

The Meyersdale Public Library photograph collections contain approximately 2,000 photographs. From the total collection, about 320 will be selected for digitization based on the selection criteria. The photographs that will be selected for online display are significant because they provide a broad overview of life immediately before, during, and after the Progressive Era in the Allegheny Mountains region (mostly Somerset Co., PA & northern Maryland). The photographs capture families & individuals both in portraits and in natural settings, military men, coal mines, mills, railroads, transportation, education, and African American families. Our photographs have been used in Somerset Magazine and in the book "Allegheny Passage Companion, Guide to History & Heritage Along the Trail" by Bill Metzger. Accessibility to the collection will be enhanced because the images will be searchable online. Currently the photographs are accessioned on paper but are not included in our library catalog. Digitization would allow users easy & free access to historical photographs that would otherwise essentially be hidden in a closet.

Sipple, Amy Kretchman
Amy Kretchman Sipple has her hair pulled back, and in the front above her forehead, she curled the hair back. The dark dress she wears is buttoned to the high neck, and the white collar is fastened with a clasp. With just a hint of a smile, she looks off to her right. Transcribed from the back 'Amy Kretchman Sipple.' 4 1/4 x 6 1/2 in. black and white photograph.
Children, Men, Books
Perhaps it is a chorus or a group of students. The girls stand tall with books in their hands. Some are in white dresses, and others are in dark ones with lots of buttons. The tall girl with a man resting his hand on her shoulder is in a white skirt and dark top, with a necklace. All the men are in suits and ties, as is a young boy in the back. 6 1/2 x 4 1/4 in. black and white photograph.
Portrait photographs, Men
The wall behind him is decorated with flowers and a tree. Well groomed with his hair neatly combed and moustache trimmed, he is smartly dressed in his dark trousers, vest, white shirt and tie. He sports a light coat with straight buttons down the front as he casually rests his arm on a chair. 4 x 6 1/2 in. black and white photograph.
Sipple, Richard
Richard Sipple has his hair combed neatly toward his right, and slightly on his forehead. He is looking to his left, which shows a view of his long moustache curling at the end. He wears a tie with his white shirt and light jacket. Transcribed from the back 'Richard Sipple.' 4 1/4 x 6 1/2 in. black and white photograph.
Forney, Samuel
Samuel Forney is in his late years. Looking to his right, his receding hair is seen, but his snow white beard is quite full. His beard extends to his chest and covers the white shirt he is wearing with a vest and a heavy dark jacket. Transcribed from the back 'Samuel Forney (1809-1890) b. 24 Jan. 1809 d. 25 Apr. 1890. Son of Joseph and Susanna (Beeghly) Forney.' 3 3/4 x 4 7/8 in. black and white photograph.
Portrait photographs, Women
This woman chose a dark, full skirted dress with ruffled sleeves and a lace trimmed collar for her photograph. After her hair was neatly pinned in a bun in the back, she sat primly with her arm resting on an intricately carved table. She looked off to her right with a steady gaze, and rested her other hand in her lap. 8 x 9 7/8 in. black and white photograph.
