Major General John White Geary, John Blair Linn's possible acquaintance, in his 40's; born in Mount Pleasant, Westmoreland County, PA in 1819; son of Richard Geary (1776 – 1831) and Margaret White Geary (1770 – 1849); married Margaret Ann Logan (1823 – 1853) in 1843 and Mary C. Church Goodman (1828 – 1913) in 1858; admitted to the bar; civil engineer; U.S. Army (1846 – 1849), appointed first U. S. postmaster (1849); first elected mayor of San Francisco (1850); farmer in Westmoreland County, PA (1852 – 1856); appointed Governor of Kansas Territory by President Pierce (1856 – 1857); Union General (1861 – 1866) mustered in June 28, 1861 as Colonel of the 28th PA Regiment, promoted to Brigadier General on April 25, 1862, promoted to Brevet Major General on May 3, 1863, mustered out on Jan. 15, 1866; 16th Governor of Pennsylvania (1867 - 1873); died in Harrisburg, PA in 1873; buried in Harrisburg Cemetery (Harrisburg, PA)
