About This Collection

The Lycoming College Campus - Past and Present collection is an exhibit of photographs depicting the buildings and grounds of the campus from its earliest days as the Williamsport Academy to the present Lycoming College campus. An effort has been made to show the transformation of the campus through the years, respecting the legacies of the past and acknowledging the changes that the future requires. This collection also honors the individuals from whom several of the buildings were named, by displaying their photographs, if possible, and short summaries of their significance in the lives of their families, their communities, and the college.

This bell hung in the west tower of Old Main before the building was torn down. It was restored by John Hill and John Harrison, Maintainence Dept.employees. Robert Norton, a student, is shown with the bell in Pennington Lounge. The Bell sits in Bell Lounge, part of Pennington Lounge, beside the stairway leading to the faculty offices.

Groups of students dine at round tables in Clarke Chapel's dining hall, which was located where music classrooms are now. Diners, dressed in sports jackets and ties, or dresses, were served by student waiters. Crumbies, women students with brushes and trays, scraped the tablecloths after the meal. This information is from remarks by John Hollenback on the 25th anniversary of the Wertz Student Center, which was built in 1969. Its dining halls replaced the cafeteria in the Clarke Building.

One student reads while lying on a bed, and another sits in front of a mirror in one of the new dormitory rooms in Crever Hall. The residence hall, located on the west side of College Place, was built to accommodate sixty female students. It was completed in 1962.

Lycoming College students Linh Le and Sara Bartlett converse in the chapel. Lindsay Memorial Chapel was dedicated in memory of the Rev. John David Lindsay and Janet Rambo Lindsay. The Culler stained glass window (c.1925) was originally in the chapel of Old Main. It was re-installed in this chapel in honor of Kenneth Himes, Treasurer of Lycoming College from 1949-1979. The chapel's altar, not visible in this photo, was handcrafted of mahogany by Eugene Landon '57. The altar's top is black granite. A solid bronze cross on the altar dates from the 1880's, and was used in a monastery in Ireland.
