About This Collection

The Lycoming College Campus - Past and Present collection is an exhibit of photographs depicting the buildings and grounds of the campus from its earliest days as the Williamsport Academy to the present Lycoming College campus. An effort has been made to show the transformation of the campus through the years, respecting the legacies of the past and acknowledging the changes that the future requires. This collection also honors the individuals from whom several of the buildings were named, by displaying their photographs, if possible, and short summaries of their significance in the lives of their families, their communities, and the college.

According to the Winter 1969 issue of the Lycoming Alumni Bulletin, "The contents of the box buried in the cornerstone in 1855 were eagerly scrutinized by Oliver E. Harris, center, director of development and two alumni." The alumni pictured are Dr. and Mrs. Charles E. Peterson, Jr. Marjorie Peterson served as a librarian at Lycoming College and was a member of the Class of 1949, the first class at Lycoming to receive baccalaureate degrees. Before demolition begins, the bell from the west wing tower of Old Main is carefully lifted and removed, to be preserved, restored and later put on display in the Bell Lounge of the Academic Center.

Work begins on the center section of Old Main as the historic building is demolished. This photos appears on apge 9 of the Winter 1969 issue of the Lycoming Alumni Bulletin with the caption, "The removal of the roof on the north side of the center section revealed the huge beams and steel supports."

The east wing is the last part of Old Main to stand. This photo appears on page 10 of the Winter 1969 issue of the Lycoming Alumni Bulletin. The caption reads, "The east wing finally succumbed December 24, 1968."

The cupola on the west wing of Old Main comes down. According to the Lycoming Alumni Bulletin (Winter 1969), "Hopes of removing the west wing cupola intact were doomed; the 80' boom was inadequate to preserve this symbol of the past. Instead, the contractor decided to put a cable around the base of the tower and pull it down with a Caterpillar tractor." This photo appears on page 5 of the Alumni Bulletin with the caption "A fraction of a second later the weathervane impaled the driveway."

The center section is all the remains of Old Main. Demolition of Old Main began on December 18, 1968 and was completed approximately two weeks later. View of Old Main looking south through the stone gates. The West Wing was built in 1839, the East Wing in 1850, and the center section was added in 1855. That section became six stories of faculty and administrative offices. Old Main functioned as a residence hall, classrooms, administrative building, and chapel combined. It was demolished in 1968. The former site is occupied by Lamade Gymnasium.

The very front of Old Main with its balcony and porch is seen. On back: 'Elizabeth Scollon Leonard, Old Main Facing West and Eveland Hall.' Elizabeth Scollon is a 1920 graduate of Williamsport Dickinson Seminary.
