About This Collection

The Lycoming College Campus - Past and Present collection is an exhibit of photographs depicting the buildings and grounds of the campus from its earliest days as the Williamsport Academy to the present Lycoming College campus. An effort has been made to show the transformation of the campus through the years, respecting the legacies of the past and acknowledging the changes that the future requires. This collection also honors the individuals from whom several of the buildings were named, by displaying their photographs, if possible, and short summaries of their significance in the lives of their families, their communities, and the college.

The right side of The Evert Gate and Quadrangle on the Lycoming College Campus, looking southeast. The gate is located along Mulberry Street on either side of the sidewalk between the Academic Center and the Heim Science and Chemistry Building. The back of the Academic Center is in the background. Samuel H. Evert: Class of 1934; Trustee 1969-1985; Doctor of Laws 1988; Chairman, Buildings and Grounds Committee 1972-1985. November 4, 1995.' Dr. Evert grew up in Kuplmont, Pa. He graduated from Dickinson Seminary, and studied for one year at the University of Pennsylvania, then left to work in the family lumber business. In 1941, he founded S. H. Evert Co., Inc., a construction company, which he ran until he retired in 1976. His company constructed buildings at Penn State and Susquehanna University, and many hospitals, factories, and schools in Central Pennsylvania.

Dedication ceremony of the Evert Gate and the Quadrangle on the Lycoming College campus. The gate is located at the corner of the Heim Science and Chemistry Building. Dr. Evert grew up in Kuplmont, Pa. He graduated from Dickinson Seminary, and studied for one year at the University of Pennsylvania, then left to work in the family lumber business. In 1941, he founded S. H. Evert Co., Inc., a construction company, which he ran until his retirement in 1976. His company constructed buildings at Penn State and Susquehanna University, and many hospitals, factories, and schools in Central Pennsylvania.

Known now as the 'Graduation Gates,' they are opened only once a year on commencement, for graduating seniors to process through. From the Bulletin of Williamsport Dickinson Seminary and Junior College, Vol. XXII, No. 5, November 1939: 'The Oliver Sterling Metzler Memorial Gateway (Pictured on front cover) Dr.Oliver Sterling Metzler of the Class of 1880 has generously provided for the erection of the stone and wrought iron gateway located in the center of the Washington Boulevard frontage … Dr. Metzler is well-known in the Central Pennsylvania Annual Conference of the Methodist Church where he was an active pastor for many years. Elected to the Board of Directors during Dr. Eveland's presidency, Dr. Metzler has served faithfully and continuously on the general board …'

View of Old Main looking south through the stone gates. The West Wing was built in 1839, the East Wing in 1850, and the center section was added in 1855. That section became six stories of faculty and administrative offices. Old Main functioned as a residence hall, classrooms, administrative building, and chapel combined. It was demolished in 1968. The former site is occupied by Lamade Gymnasium.

Students are gathered on the lawn in front of Old Main. Sunlight filters through the trees. The view is looking toward Eveland Hall (Angel Factory). The very front of Old Main with its balcony and porch is seen. On back: 'Elizabeth Scollon Leonard, Old Main Facing West and Eveland Hall.' Elizabeth Scollon is a 1920 graduate of Williamsport Dickinson Seminary.

Charlene Shangraw Gate stands on the corner of Washington Boulevard and College Place next to Williams Hall and across from Admissions House The plaque reads: 'Dedicated to Charlene Shangraw, Loving Wife and Mother and Friend of Lycoming College.' Mrs. Shangraw's husband, Robert L. Shangraw, served on the College's Board of Trustees and was chairman of the Board for several years. The gate was a birthday present to Mrs. Shangraw from her husband, and was presented to her at a surprise party at Admissions House.

'Persons Cross At Own Risk' is on a sign marking construction in the gate area of the south side of Old Main. Construction is in progress just inside the iron railings in front of the stone stairway leading to Old Main. On back: 'Published Sep 19 1948.'

Photographic print of a sketch of Old Main from the 1860s. This is the way the building looked soon after the three wings were joined in 1855. The fence in this sketch is still wooden. It was later replaced by a stone fence with pillars.

The David B Sykes Gate at the entrance to Lycoming College at the corner of Little League Boulevard and Market Street. Mr. Sykes graduated from Williamsport Dickinson Seminary and Junior College in 1938, and continued his education at Pennsylvania State University. He earned a bachelor's degree and became a Certified Public Accountant. After serving in World War II, he became an accountant, and later became controller of Giant Food, Inc. He retired in 1996 as director, senior vice president of finance, corporate secretary, treasurer, and the chief financial officer of Giant. He has made generous contributions to Lycoming College. Each class officially enters Lycoming College by walking as a group with their class banner through the Sykes Gate, and pass out through the Metzler Memorial Gate at graduation.
