About This Collection

The Lycoming College Campus - Past and Present collection is an exhibit of photographs depicting the buildings and grounds of the campus from its earliest days as the Williamsport Academy to the present Lycoming College campus. An effort has been made to show the transformation of the campus through the years, respecting the legacies of the past and acknowledging the changes that the future requires. This collection also honors the individuals from whom several of the buildings were named, by displaying their photographs, if possible, and short summaries of their significance in the lives of their families, their communities, and the college.

According to an article published in the Fall 1966 'Lycoming Alumni Bulletin', it was necessary to go forty-two feet below grade at the west side of the building by Mulberry Street before pouring the footings. 'More than 36 cubic yards of earth were removed. Structural steel first appeared in the middle of November.'

Aerial view of the Lycoming College Campus in 1967, looking northeast. This photo shows the construction of the Academic Center in progress. The Academic Center is in the large buiding in the foreground of the photo. It faces south. The building on the right (east) with the two white cupolas is Old Main. It was razed in 1968. In front of the Academic Center, to the right of the parking lot is Eveland Hall. Behind Old Main and beside the Academic Center is Hilltop Gymnasium. At the right is Clarke Building and Chapel. Behind Hilltop Gymnasium is Rich Hall and the Wertz Student Center. Across from Wertz Student Center is Forrest Hall, and to its left (north) is Williams Hall. The President's House and Old Fine Arts Center are at the northwest corner of the Quad, the large grassy area. The large building at the northeast corner of the campus is East Hall. The building on the east side of the Quad with the steps leading up to it, is Wesley Hall. Long Hall, with the clock tower, is beside it behind the Clarke Building and Chapel. Memorial Hall is beside the Clarke Building. The building behind Long Hall is Asbury Hall. Across from Memorial Hall and beside Asbury Hall is Skeath Hall. The building in the far southeast corner of campus, to the right of the trees, is the Old Science Building.
