About This Collection

The Lycoming College Campus - Past and Present collection is an exhibit of photographs depicting the buildings and grounds of the campus from its earliest days as the Williamsport Academy to the present Lycoming College campus. An effort has been made to show the transformation of the campus through the years, respecting the legacies of the past and acknowledging the changes that the future requires. This collection also honors the individuals from whom several of the buildings were named, by displaying their photographs, if possible, and short summaries of their significance in the lives of their families, their communities, and the college.

Dorothy and Samuel Evert pose beside the newly-dedicated Evert Gate and Quadrangle on the Lycoming College Campus. The gate is located on Mulberry Street. Dr. Evert grew up in Kuplmont, Pa. He graduated from Dickinson Seminary, and studied for one year at the University of Pennsylvania, then left to work in the family lumber business. In 1941, he founded S. H. Evert Co., Inc., a construction company, which he ran until he retired in 1976. His company constructed buildings at Penn State and Susquehanna University, and many hospitals, factories, and schools in Central Pennsylvania.

Plaque on the column of the Evert Gate. Samuel H. Evert graduated from Dickinson Seminary, and studied for one year at the University of Pennsylvania, then left to work in the family lumber business. In 1941, he founded S. H. Evert Co., Inc., a construction company, which he ran until he retired in 1976. His company constructed buildings at Penn State and Susquehanna University, and many hospitals, factories, and schools in Central Pennsylvania.

The Evert Gate and Quadrangle on the Lycoming College Campus, looking northeast. According to the Winter 1969 issue of the Lycoming Alumni Bulletin, "The contents of the box buried in the cornerstone in 1855 were eagerly scrutinized by Oliver E. Harris, center, director of development and two alumni." The alumni pictured are Dr. and Mrs. Charles E. Peterson, Jr. Marjorie Peterson served as a librarian at Lycoming College and was a member of the Class of 1949, the first class at Lycoming to receive baccalaureate degrees. Before demolition begins, the bell from the west wing tower of Old Main is carefully lifted and removed, to be preserved, restored and later put on display in the Bell Lounge of the Academic Center.

Work begins on the center section of Old Main as the historic building is demolished. This photos appears on apge 9 of the Winter 1969 issue of the Lycoming Alumni Bulletin with the caption, "The removal of the roof on the north side of the center section revealed the huge beams and steel supports."

The east wing is the last part of Old Main to stand. This photo appears on page 10 of the Winter 1969 issue of the Lycoming Alumni Bulletin. The caption reads, "The east wing finally succumbed December 24, 1968."

The cupola on the west wing of Old Main comes down. According to the Lycoming Alumni Bulletin (Winter 1969), "Hopes of removing the west wing cupola intact were doomed; the 80' boom was inadequate to preserve this symbol of the past. Instead, the contractor decided to put a cable around the base of the tower and pull it down with a Caterpillar tractor." This photo appears on page 5 of the Alumni Bulletin with the caption "A fraction of a second later the weathervane impaled the driveway."

The center section is all the remains of Old Main. Demolition of Old Main began on December 18, 1968 and was completed approximately two weeks later. View of the Fine Arts Center, formerly Hilltop Gymnasium, looking east through the stone gates. It was constructed in 1924, and was the first building project of President John W. Long. It was renovated and re-opened as the Fine Arts Center in 1980. It was re-dedicated in 1983. The Fine Arts Building has separate drawing, painting, and modeling studios; a sculpture, ceramic, and metal foundry; printmaking and woodworking shops; an art history lecture room; offices, and storage facilities. On back: 'Fine Arts Building; Michael Roskin.' Dr. Roskin has taught at Lycoming College since 1972.

The Fine Arts Building, formerly Hilltop Gymnasium. The building was constructed in 1924, and was the first building project of President John W. Long. It was renovated and re-opened as the Fine Arts Center in 1980. The Fine Arts Building has separate drawing, painting, and modeling studios; a sculpture, ceramic, and metal foundry; printmaking and woodworking shops; an art history lecture room; offices, an dstorage facilities. View of Forrest Hall looking northwest. This photo was taken in the spring of 1998. The three-story residence hall was built to accommodate ninety-two women students. The rooms are arranged as suites, with an adjoining bathroom between two rooms. Groundbreaking for the building was in September 1968, and it was completed in 1969. It was designed and constructed by Unitec Corporation of Ann Arbor, Michigan. Forrest Hall is a memorial from James M. and Katherine Forrest Mathers to Mrs. Mathers' parents, Dr. and Mrs. Fletcher Bliss Forrest, and sister, Anna Forrest Burfeindt. Katherine Forrest Mathers graduated from Williamsport Dickinson Seminary in 1928. She earned an A.B. degree in 1932, and Master of Arts degree in 1933, both from Bucknell University. She continues to come back for Homecoming and other campus events.

During World War II, when cadets from the Army Air Corps occupied Dickinson dormitories, the Dickinson Seminary students lived in off-campus dormitories on Franklin and Fourth Streets. This is one of the temporary dormitories.

View of the Heim Biology and Chemistry Building looking west toward the glass-enclosed greenhouse. The Heim Building is a multi-level structure of over 63,000 sq. ft. in area. It contains eight biology laboratories, six chemistry laboratories, three classrooms, departmental seminar rooms, two large lecture halls, thirteen faculty offices, biology and chemistry reading rooms and several student research labs. It also has numerous specialized areas for marine life, instrumentation, a darkroom, a greenhouse, shops, a lab preparation area, and specialized storage.
