About This Collection

The Lycoming College Campus - Past and Present collection is an exhibit of photographs depicting the buildings and grounds of the campus from its earliest days as the Williamsport Academy to the present Lycoming College campus. An effort has been made to show the transformation of the campus through the years, respecting the legacies of the past and acknowledging the changes that the future requires. This collection also honors the individuals from whom several of the buildings were named, by displaying their photographs, if possible, and short summaries of their significance in the lives of their families, their communities, and the college.

View of Old Main looking south through the stone gates. The West Wing was built in 1839, the East Wing in 1850, and the center section was added in 1855. That section became six stories of faculty and administrative offices. Old Main functioned as a residence hall, classrooms, administrative building, and chapel combined. It was demolished in 1968. The former site is occupied by Lamade Gymnasium.

Elizabeth Scollon is a 1920 graduate of Williamsport Dickinson Seminary.

Print of a John De Pol wood engraving of Old Main. This print is from a limited edition collection of six prints commissioned by Lycoming College. The West Wing of Old Main was built in 1839, the East Wing in 1850. The center section was added in 1855, and became six stories of faculty and administrative offices. Old Main functioned as residence hall, classrooms, administrative building and chapel combined. It was demolished in 1968. The former site is occupied by Lamade Gymnasium.

The Maintenance Building at the southeast corner of the Lycoming College campus was demolished in 1996 in an effort to clear the area bordering downtown Williamsport. The building had been built in 1850.

Entrance to the old Science Building. The building was originally used as part of Flock's Brewery. Lycoming College acquired it in 1951, and converted it to a science facility in 1956-57. According to a 1958 newspaper article, the interior was painted and plastered, acoustical tiles were installed in the ceilings, and asphalt floors were laid. Improvements were also made to the electrical and plumbing systems. According to the 1987-88 Academic Bulletin, the building housed biology and chemistry laboratories, classroooms, a lecture hall, and a greenhouse, and was used until 1988. It then served as a storage center for the Buildings and Grounds department until its demolition.

Front view of the old Science Building, with the east end of the front of Bradley Hall to its left in the photo. The Science building was the former Flock Brewery, which was built before 1850. Lycoming College purchased the property in 1951. The facilities were modernized for the biology, physics, and chemistry departments, and were used beginning in 1956. It was razed in June, 1996 after the Heim Building was constructed.

Demolition of the old Science Building in 1996. The building was originally the bottling works of the Flock Brewery, built in 1850. Lycoming College purchased it in 1951, and renovated it with classrooms and laboratories for the Chemistry, Biology, and Physics Departments. It was used until the Heim Biology and Chemistry Building was constructed in 1990. Clarke Building and Chapel is in the background.
