About This Collection

The Lycoming College Campus - Past and Present collection is an exhibit of photographs depicting the buildings and grounds of the campus from its earliest days as the Williamsport Academy to the present Lycoming College campus. An effort has been made to show the transformation of the campus through the years, respecting the legacies of the past and acknowledging the changes that the future requires. This collection also honors the individuals from whom several of the buildings were named, by displaying their photographs, if possible, and short summaries of their significance in the lives of their families, their communities, and the college.

Close-up aerial view of the Lycoming College campus facing east. The large building in the foreground is the Academic Center and the attached library. Next to the library is Hilltop Gymnasium, facing south, and next to that is Clarke Building and Chapel. Across from them on the other side of the trees is Old Main, the long building with two white cupolas. The roof of Bradley Hall can be seen to the left (east) of Old Main. Between Old Main and the Clarke Building, facing west, is Memorial Hall. Behind that is a dormitory, Skeath Hall. The dormitory by Skeath Hall is Asbury Hall. In front of Asbury Hall on the east side of the Quad is Long Hall, the building with the four columns and cupola. Long Hall housed the library and became an administrative building in 1968, when the library was moved to its location in the Academic Center. Continuing counter-clockwise around the Quad, the large grassy area in the middle of the photo, Wesley Hall, a men's dormitory, is next to Long Hall. The dormitory to its right (on the left in the photo) is East Hall. The white buildings across the Quad from East Hall are the Fine Arts Building and the President's house. Next to the President's house is the Wertz Student Center, and next to that building, behind the Hilltop Gymnasium, is Rich Hall. Across the street from Rich Hall is another dormitory, Crever Hall, and to its left, at the far left of the photo, is Williams Hall.

The caption reports about the announcement of a $6 million expansion program spanning the next 10 years. Most of the land was acquired through the Lycoming College Redevelopment Project. The Academic Center had recently been built, and work had just begun on a new girls' dormitory, Forrest Hall. Plans had been made for the razing of Old Main and construction of a new gymnasium on the site.
