About This Collection

The Lycoming College Collection begins after the accreditation of the Williamsport Dickinson Seminary and Junior College as a four year college. It is a growing collection that chronicles the evolution of this small liberal arts institution, and will include photographs, annuals, catalogs, event programs, alumni newsletters, and promotional material. Student life is represented in publication and information concerning organizations and activities. Continuing in the tradition of the forerunners of the college, a rich musical, theatrical, and artistic environment is documented. Athletics also figure prominently in this collection. An expanding collection of faculty and presidential papers have been contributed, along with records from the libraries, Archival items include assorted artifacts, numerous photographs, and a collection of scrapbooks spanning forty-five years.

Cast members and state committee of 'Kind Lady' pose for a photo on the stage set. The three-act play, a mystery-comedy, was presented February 26th and 27th, by Frill and Frown, the College's dramatic club. The play, directed by Miss Louise Frownfelter of the college faculty, was the first for the group. Some cast members have been identified by E. Biichle. Seated on the floor in the checked suit is Anna Ruth Sandin. The student to her right, wearing the suit jacket is Esther Rinehuls. In the second row (seated), the last two students are Dorothy Fairchild and Norma Woodford. The three girls in the back, seated in front of the male students are Mary Jane Schreiner, Jeannette Confer, and Frances Toohey. Daniel Boland, a federal official, addresses the audience at the dedication of the Soldiers and Sailors Memorial Building, November 1, 1947. Mr. Boland congratulated the college on taking a war surplus building and improving it. The building was dedicated to twenty-five war dead and more than four hundred World War II service men and women. Information is from a November 1947 newspaper clipping.

Female students carrying books ascend the stairs at the northeast side of Hilltop Gymnasium. Rich Hall can be seen at the left, and the Fine Arts Building in the background. The Bell is on the flagcourt. The President's Message in the Williamsport Dickinson Seminary and Junior College July 1941 'Bulletin' mentions that the bell in the west wing of Old Main cracked unaccountably just before commencement. College officials were deciding what to do with it. It was later removed from the tower, placed on the flagcourt, and dedicated in 1949. Students have been identified as Cary Wardner, Marian Musselman '52, and Ann Palmer '52.

Lycoming College President James E. Douthat is the institution's fourteenth president. President Douthat came to the College in 1989 from Albion College in Michigan, where he served as executive vice president. He earned a bachelor's degree from the College of William and Mary, a Master of Divinity degree from the Divinity School, Duke University, and a doctorate in higher education administration from Duke University.

Left to right: Nathan W. Stuart, Robert L. Shangraw and Dr. Douthat. Nathan W. Stuart ('36) is shown placing the gold medallion of office around the neck of the newly inaugurated President Douthat. The medallion is inscribed with the names of the 13 other presidents who previously headed the institution since 1812. Robert L. Shangraw ('58), chairman of the board of trustees, made the official announcement of Dr. Douthat's election.

Nighttime view of a large group of students, a pep band, and cheerleaders waiting at the railway for Yats Esool, the Spirit of Football. Yats Esool, 'Stay Loose' spelled backwards, was a masked UCLA football player that traveled in his football uniform carrying a suitcase and a fish bowl. The tradition continued through the 1950s and 1960s.
