About This Collection

The Lycoming College Collection begins after the accreditation of the Williamsport Dickinson Seminary and Junior College as a four year college. It is a growing collection that chronicles the evolution of this small liberal arts institution, and will include photographs, annuals, catalogs, event programs, alumni newsletters, and promotional material. Student life is represented in publication and information concerning organizations and activities. Continuing in the tradition of the forerunners of the college, a rich musical, theatrical, and artistic environment is documented. Athletics also figure prominently in this collection. An expanding collection of faculty and presidential papers have been contributed, along with records from the libraries, Archival items include assorted artifacts, numerous photographs, and a collection of scrapbooks spanning forty-five years.

John F. Piper, Jr., Dean of the College, poses in the lobby of Heim Science Building at his 70th birthday celebration. To mark the number of years that he has served at Lycoming College, the Dean walked 38 laps around the Quad. Those who walked laps with him donated canned goods to be presented to St. Anthony's Center and the United Churches Food pantry. Monetary donations were presented to Habitat for Humanity and Big Brothers and Big Sisters. The dean announced his retirement last September. The dean's birthday was November 18th.

Dr. Gabriel and Kellie Cicconi pose for a picture in the archives at the reception for Dr. John F. Piper, Jr., retiring Dean of Lycoming College. Kellie worked together with Dr. Jeffrey D. Newman to study and characterize a new species of Acinetobacter, which was found in Loyalsock Creek in North Central Pennsylvania. She tentatively named it Acinetobacter piperi, in honor or Dr. Piper.

He came to the college in 1949 with a A.B. and M.S. from Syracuse University and a Ph.D. from Cornell University. Dr. Hutson served as president of Lycoming College from 1969 until 1976. Born in 1914 and a native of South Carolina, Dr. Hutson earned his B.A. at Wofford College in 1932. He later graduated from Duke University School of Divinity and received his Ph.D. in religion from the University of Chicago. During his career, Dr. Hutson was a professor of religion at Birmingham Southern University (1938-1946), taught at Ohio Wesleyan University (1947-1952) and in 1952, became President of Greensboro College where he stayed until 1964. He came to Lycoming College after serving as Provost of American University from 1964-1969. He retired from Lycoming College in 1976 and moved to Greensboro, North Carolina in 1982. Dr. Hutson died in 2006 at the age of 92. This photo appears on page 84 of the 1973 Arrow yearbook. [Please see yearbook link below.]

Portrait of Dr. John F. Piper, Jr., Academic Dean of Lycoming College. This photograph was taken to be used for Snowden Library's 'Read' poster collection. Dr Piper began his career at Lycoming College in 1969 as an assistant professor in the History Department. He earned Bachelor of Arts degree from Lafayette College, Bachelor of Divinity Degree from Yale Divinity School, and Doctorate from Duke University. Prior to coming to Lycoming College, he taught for five years at Mount Holyoke College. He was promoted to an associate professor in 1974, to a full professor in 1984, and named Dean of the College in 1993. Dr. Piper is the author of two books,'The American Churches in World War I,' and 'Robert E. Speer: Prophet of the American Church', and numerous articles. He is the co-author, with Robert H. Larson, Richard J. Morris, of 'Williamsport: Frontier Village to Regional Center'. Dr. Piper is an ordained United Methodist minister, and active in the church, as well as in community activities.
