About This Collection

The Lycoming College Collection begins after the accreditation of the Williamsport Dickinson Seminary and Junior College as a four year college. It is a growing collection that chronicles the evolution of this small liberal arts institution, and will include photographs, annuals, catalogs, event programs, alumni newsletters, and promotional material. Student life is represented in publication and information concerning organizations and activities. Continuing in the tradition of the forerunners of the college, a rich musical, theatrical, and artistic environment is documented. Athletics also figure prominently in this collection. An expanding collection of faculty and presidential papers have been contributed, along with records from the libraries, Archival items include assorted artifacts, numerous photographs, and a collection of scrapbooks spanning forty-five years.

Daniel Boland, a federal official, hands the keys of the Soldiers and Sailors Memorial Building to Arnold A. Phipps, vice president of the college Board of Directors, as Dr. John long looks on. Mr. Boland congratulated the college on taking a war surplus building and improving it. The building was dedicated to twenty-five war dead and more than four hundred World War II service men and women. John Detwiler, Acting President of Lycoming College presents the Lycoming College Award of Distinction to Katherine Forrest Mathers '28. Parts of the citation read: 'You entered Williamsport Dickinson Seminary in September, 1926, and graduated with the Class of 1928. Your education was continued at Bucknell University where you earned the A.B. degree in 1932 and the Master of Arts degree in 1933. On Christmas Day, 1941, you became the bride of James M. Mathers and together you developed a successful insurance business in Altoona … you continued to manage the business while your husband was on duty during World War II, and after his untimely death several years later … Your concern for the College and your generosity prompted you to establish a memorial honoring your parents and your sister, Anna, who graduated from the Seminary in 1930. This memorial is our newest women's dormitory, Forrest Hall ...' John G. Detwiler, Acting President of the College.

Mr. and Mrs. David B Sykes pose in front of the gate named in Mr. Sykes' honor. Mr. Sykes graduated from Williamsport Dickinson Seminary and Junior College in 1938, and continued his education at Pennsylvania State University. He earned a bachelor's degree and became a Certified Public Accountant. After serving in World War II, he worked as an accountant, and later as controller of Giant Food, Inc. He retired in 1996 as director, senior vice president of finance, corporate secretary, treasurer, and the chief financial officer of Giant. He has made generous contributions to Lycoming College.

Mr. and Mrs Stanton Barclay and family members at the Heim Building dedication ceremony. The Barclay Lecture Hall in the Heim Building is dedicated to the Barclay family.The plaque in Barclay Hall reads: 'The Stanton D. and Edith V. Barclay Lecture Hall in Appreciation for Their Generosity.' Stanton D. Barclay and his brother Charles F. Barclay founded Barclay Water Management, Inc. in 1932 in Boston, Massachusetts. He was an engineering graduate of Pennsylvania State University, and taught mechanical engineering at the Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, New York and Renssalaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, New York before establishing the water treatment business. Portrait of Robert Shangraw, member of Lycoming College Board of Trustees. Shangraw Stadium bears his name, and Shangraw Performance Hall in Mary Lindsay Welch Honors Hall is named in honor of him and his wife, Charlene. Mr. Shangraw, a 1958 graduate of Lycoming College, served as Chairman of the Board of Trustees of Lycoming College from 1989-2005. He chaired the Campaign for Lycoming College in 1989 and again in 2000. He was First Vice President of Investments for Merrill Lynch, retiring in 2001. He has been active in community affairs.
