Lycoming College President Dr. Harold Hutson awards flautist Elaine Shaffer an honorary Doctor of Humanities degree during the intermission of her January 12th Williamsport concert. Miss Shaffer grew up in Altoona and graduated from Williamsport High School. She studied at the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia, receiving the Artist's Diploma in Flute in 1947. She was a member of the Philadelphia Orchestra, the Houston Symphony, and the Kansas City Philharmonic, and performed as a soloist with nearly every major European orchestra. Tribute was paid to head football coach Frank Girardi, one of the winningest coaches in NCAA history, at Lycoming College's annual football awards banquet. Girardi was recognized for becoming only the 17th coach at any NCAA football level to win 250 games. The milestone was met November 16, 2005, during an over time victory against rival Susquehanna Universtiy. According to the Lycoming College website, "The Dean of the College, Dr. John Piper, completed a rare collection by presenting Girardi with one of the game balls from his 250th win. The front of the ball was painted blue with white and gold lettering that marked the occasion."

John Detwiler, Acting President of Lycoming College presents the Lycoming College Award of Distinction to Katherine Forrest Mathers '28. Parts of the citation read: 'You entered Williamsport Dickinson Seminary in September, 1926, and graduated with the Class of 1928. Your education was continued at Bucknell University where you earned the A.B. degree in 1932 and the Master of Arts degree in 1933. On Christmas Day, 1941, you became the bride of James M. Mathers and together you developed a successful insurance business in Altoona … you continued to manage the business while your husband was on duty during World War II, and after his untimely death several years later … Your concern for the College and your generosity prompted you to establish a memorial honoring your parents and your sister, Anna, who graduated from the Seminary in 1930. This memorial is our newest women's dormitory, Forrest Hall ...' John G. Detwiler, Acting President of the College.

Mary Landon Russell, a 1933 graduate of Lycoming College, is presented with a rocking chair bearing the Lycoming College logo as the outstanding alumnus. Mrs. Russell, an associate professor of music at the college since 1936, attended Julliard and Eastman schools of music and received a master of arts in music from the Pennsylvania State University. Her masters thesis concerned the history of music in Williamsport. She helped to organize the Williamsport Civic Chorus and Williamsport Music Club. She has been active in church affairs as an elder, Sunday School teacher, and chairman of the music committee.

Stanton D. Barclay receives an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters degree. Stanton D. Barclay and his brother Charles F. Barclay founded Barclay Water Management, Inc. in 1932 in Boston, Massachusetts. He was an engineering graduate of Pennsylvania State University, and taught mechanical engineering at the Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, New York and Renssalaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, New York before establishing the water treatment business. Mr. Barclay is president of the Barclay Chemical Company.
