About This Collection

The Lycoming College Collection begins after the accreditation of the Williamsport Dickinson Seminary and Junior College as a four year college. It is a growing collection that chronicles the evolution of this small liberal arts institution, and will include photographs, annuals, catalogs, event programs, alumni newsletters, and promotional material. Student life is represented in publication and information concerning organizations and activities. Continuing in the tradition of the forerunners of the college, a rich musical, theatrical, and artistic environment is documented. Athletics also figure prominently in this collection. An expanding collection of faculty and presidential papers have been contributed, along with records from the libraries, Archival items include assorted artifacts, numerous photographs, and a collection of scrapbooks spanning forty-five years.

Car owners and passengers watch as male students from Lycoming College wash cars in the driveway of the old City Hall on Pine Street in Williamsport, PA. They were participants in a fund raiser for the Community Chest YMCA fund. The Sears Roebuck and Co. building is on the corner across the street.

Formal portrait of Dr. John W. Long. Dr. Long arrived at Williamsport Dickinson Seminary in October, 1921. Prior to his career in academics, he was a minister at Littlestown, Dillsburg, Wellsville, West Side Clearfield, and State College. He organized and directed the Wesley Foundation at Pennsylvania State College (now Penn State) until 1921. Under his leadership, the Seminary became an accredited Junior College in 1929, and a four-year accredited college in 1948. This portrait appears in the Lycoming Courier dated October 8, 1954, which congratulates him on completing his thirty-third year at the college, and comments on his planned retirement at the end of the academic year. He was honored at a testimonial dinner on May 14, 1955. Note on back of photo: 'ret Jim Frailey, Job Dept., Grit.'

Female students carrying books ascend the stairs at the northeast side of Hilltop Gymnasium. Rich Hall can be seen at the left, and the Fine Arts Building in the background. The Bell is on the flagcourt. The President's Message in the Williamsport Dickinson Seminary and Junior College July 1941 'Bulletin' mentions that the bell in the west wing of Old Main cracked unaccountably just before commencement. College officials were deciding what to do with it. It was later removed from the tower, placed on the flagcourt, and dedicated in 1949. Students have been identified as Cary Wardner, Marian Musselman '52, and Ann Palmer '52.
