About This Collection

The Lycoming College Collection begins after the accreditation of the Williamsport Dickinson Seminary and Junior College as a four year college. It is a growing collection that chronicles the evolution of this small liberal arts institution, and will include photographs, annuals, catalogs, event programs, alumni newsletters, and promotional material. Student life is represented in publication and information concerning organizations and activities. Continuing in the tradition of the forerunners of the college, a rich musical, theatrical, and artistic environment is documented. Athletics also figure prominently in this collection. An expanding collection of faculty and presidential papers have been contributed, along with records from the libraries, Archival items include assorted artifacts, numerous photographs, and a collection of scrapbooks spanning forty-five years.

According to the April 1966 issue of the Lycoming Alumni Bulletin, a task force was established to ""take an overview of Lycoming as it is today and where it needs to go as to determine whether changes, major or minor, are needed."" Members of the task force were, from left to right: Dr. Robert H. Byington, Dr. James K. Hummer, Robert H. Ewing, Dr. Robert W. Rabold, Dr. Eloise Gompf, Kenneth E. Himes, Dr. Clifford O. Smith, Richard T. Stites, Dr. Paul Mojzes, and Dr. Philip R. Marshall.

This photo appears in the June 30, 1963 President's Report. The caption reads, "Mr. Robert A. Newcombe, Director of Admissions (shaking hands) and Mr. Frank J. Kamus, Assistant Director of Admissions, welcome freshmen to the College." The back of the photo identifies the students as Betsy Clark and Steven Vincent.

According to the fall of 1956 Lycoming College Bulletin, "Coach David G. Busey is pictured with two veteran warriors…Kenneth A. Polcyn from Williamsport, Pennsylvania and Wayne E. Bohn from Yeagerstown, Pennsylvania. Polcyn, a Junior, was N.A.I.A. All-State end last year. Wayne Bohn, as Sophomore, was one of the leading ground-gainers for the Warriors last year. Great things are expected from both boys this season."

Portrait of Angela Kyte, Class of 1973, and a casualty of the World Trade Center disaster. Angela not only served as president of the Alumni Association Executive Board, but was also a trustee of the college. A service of remembrance, held in her honor in Boonton, N.J., on September 27th brought together many in the Lycoming community. Mrs. Kyte was a big advocate of education.

Bishops, College administrators, Wertz, D. Frederick (President 1955-1978)
Portrait of Dr. D. Frederick Wertz, President of Lycoming College from 1955-1968. Born in Lewistown, PA October 1916, he graduated from Newport High School, and earned a bachelor's degree from Dickinson College in Carlisle in 1937. He earned master's and doctoral degrees in theology from Boston College in 1939 and 1940. Before his election as president of the college in 1955, Dr. Wertz served as a pastor in several churches, and was superintendent of the Williamsport District of the Methodist Church. Dr. Wertz was elected a a bishop of the United Methodist Church in 1968. He was greatly involved as a participant and leader in community service organizations. Photo appears in the 'Lycoming College Report,' September 1972.
