Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. is shown leaving Clarke Chapel, followed by Lycoming's president, Dr. D. Frederick Wertz and Philip C. Hammond, Director of Religious Activities. At the time, King was president of the Montgomery Improvement Assn., the organization that led the protest against segregated buses in Montgomery, AL. His topic was: 'Facing the Challenge of a New Age.' The Williamsport Sun-Gazette reported: 'Touching on colonialism and imperialism, Dr. King told his audience that the peoples of the world have gotten tired of being plunged into exploitation; of being dominated politically; of being segregated and humiliated. As a result, he pointed out, those people are breaking loose from colonialism; imperialism is passing away, and freedom and justice are coming into being. 'The present tensions, he stated, "are the usual things that accompany a new birth -- historically and biologically. There can be no birth without growing pains,' he added, referring to what he termed as the 'new age.'" He was entertained at a luncheon at The Lycoming before leaving Williamsport for Philadelphia on his way back to his home in Montgomery, AL.
