About This Collection

This collection contains material originating from and telling about Williamsport Dickinson Seminary Junior College and Preparatory School. Although spanning almost two decades, from 1928 through 1947, the collection is modest in size. The publications, annuals, catalogs, alumni newsletters and promotional material, are well represented and provide a wealth of information about the school, the faculty and the students. Evident from the collection is a rich musical and social atmosphere. Athletics and official events are also well documented. Reflecting world history, two significant events in the life of the Junior College occur as a result of World War II. Almost one- third of the collection centers around the school's involvement with the war effort. The institution of two different military training programs are chronicled here. Records of accreditation from a junior college to a four year institute are included, which was also influenced by World War II and the resulting return of military personnel desiring to pursue opportunities for higher education. A small part of the collection consists of items not specifically produced by the college but most likely accumulated by staff or faculty, enhances the portrayal of the time period,

Bells, Monuments and memorials, Students
Four female students kneel on boards and look at one of the bells that formerly rang in Old Main. Printed on back of the photo: 'Students of Williamsport Dickinson Junior college examine the old bell which is to be turned in for scrap. Published Dec 13 1942.' The President's Message in the Williamsport Dickinson Seminary and Junior College July 1941 'Bulletin' mentions that the bell in the west wing of Old Main cracked unaccountably just before commencement. College officials were deciding what to do with it. It was later removed from the tower, and place in front of Old Main. The bell was later mounted on a concrete slab and placed on the flagcourt, and dedicated in 1949.

Caption reads: 'The Union,' student magazine of Dickinson Junior College, recently was awarded first honors for junior college publications and all-Columbian honors for features at the national convention of the Columbia Press Scholastic Association in New York City. The photographic feature sections of the magazine were highly commended. May Queen, Violet Duvall processes outside of Old Main. A young boy assists with her veil. From the June 1928 issue of The Dickinson Union: "A very pretty May Fete was presented by the Girls of the Seminary on Saturday, May 12, 1928, on the Seminary Campus. The Queen, Violet Duvall, was prettily dressed in white. The procession started from the Girls' entrance, led by two heralds, Jane Fraser and Jean Jackson." The student newsletter goes on to say that "This is the first record of May Day Exercises in the history of the school and we hope that there will be many more and they will be as successful."

On back: 'Spotless in their white coats are the young male students of Williamsport Dickinson Junior College seen in the above picture. They are responsible for the table service given the boarding student at the local institution, thus defraying part of their expenses. This Friday evening the young men will be on an important 'dress parade' as they are slated to serve the Greater Dickinson banquet to be held in the junior college gymnasium.' Published Feb 16 1941
