About This Collection

This collection contains material originating from and telling about Williamsport Dickinson Seminary Junior College and Preparatory School. Although spanning almost two decades, from 1928 through 1947, the collection is modest in size. The publications, annuals, catalogs, alumni newsletters and promotional material, are well represented and provide a wealth of information about the school, the faculty and the students. Evident from the collection is a rich musical and social atmosphere. Athletics and official events are also well documented. Reflecting world history, two significant events in the life of the Junior College occur as a result of World War II. Almost one- third of the collection centers around the school's involvement with the war effort. The institution of two different military training programs are chronicled here. Records of accreditation from a junior college to a four year institute are included, which was also influenced by World War II and the resulting return of military personnel desiring to pursue opportunities for higher education. A small part of the collection consists of items not specifically produced by the college but most likely accumulated by staff or faculty, enhances the portrayal of the time period,

Banquets, Celebrations
Note on back: 'Blue and gold crepe paper and streamers.' The banquet began as a student activity, and in the 1940s was expanded to include alumni and friends. It was celebrated the Friday closest to February 22nd, and was a joint celebration for Washington's birthday and to 'point to the day when a Greater Dickinson would be a reality.' The banquet was originally held in the college dining room, but attendance during the presidency of Dr. Long increased to the point where a larger facility was necessary. The banquet was moved to the gymnasium. Information for this description comes from the 1939 banquet program. At that time, Clarke Chapel and dining hall were under construction., the new athletic field was nearing completion, and re-landscaping was about to begin.

Cadets, Military air pilots
Jim Hayes, Bob Lavine and Curtis Helwick in front of Old Main. Army Aviation Cadets were being trained on the Williamsport Dickinson and Junior College campus, and were housed in the student dormitories.

Pictured are members of the John Wesley Club. The club was comprised of ministerial students and was connected to the Student Christian Association. According to the Dart yearbook of 1942, members of the club ""are called upon for various ministerial duties in the city [of Williamsport]."" From left to right are: James Mort '42, George Hewitt '42, Irving Russell '42, William Jones '43, Fred Stiner '43, and James Dendler '42. This photo appears on page 46 of the 1942 Dart yearbook.

May Court poses for a photo outside of Hilltop Gym. The May Queen was Helen Flumerfelt, (front, 1st from left); Attendant to the Queen was Dorothy Smith ( back, 6th from left). Published May 17, 1935. From 'The Dart': On May 23, a May Day program was given by the girl's physical education department, under the direction of Miss Delo. She arranged the program in the form of a village festivel. The villagers came out on a May morning to celebrate. After dancing awhile, they suddenly decided to bring their queen, her attendant, and the crowd. Helen Flumerfelt was the queen and Dorothy Smith her attendant … The courts did the traditional May Pole dance and the villagers from other villages entertained the queens.

Archery, Old Main (1839-1968)
Seven female archers practice on the lawn between the stone gate and steps leading to Old Main, and the railroad tracks. Old Main and the 'bridge' leading to Bradley Hall can be seen in the background. Cars are parked in front of the building.Two girls have bows pulled and ready to shoot, and five others observe. Girls are dressed in skirts that fall below the knee and blouses or sweaters. The photo was taken in the fall or early spring, since the trees are bare of leaves. The woman with the glasses may be Minnie V. Taylor, who was the Dean of Women at the Junior College in 1932.

Two female students study at night in a dormitory room. Cadets from the Army Air Corps occupied Dickinson Seminary dormitories, so students lived in dormitories off-campus on Franklin and Fourth Streets.
