270 Tuesday 10 July 1945 7:40 am My darling, Last night, instead of the usual Hollywood movie, we showed a number of shorts supplied by the O.W.I. - 3 newsreels (2 of them with Japanese titles and sound strip), a short on ‘the American town’, another called ‘Henry Browne - the story of a typical American farmer.’ Henry Browne turned out to be a negro, and the theme was simply what he had done with his farm and a rotation of crops, as advised by the Dept. of Agriculture to support the war effort. He had a son in training as a fighter pilot. I liked the film because it gave the negro a break. (Have seen one negro officer out here attached to a B-29 unit - two or more Chinese) The auditorium is being greatly improved with bulletin boards on inside walls between all windows (painted black for use either as blackboards or as places for displaying OWI picture sets and clippings from Life, etc.), a large new movie screen just painted white, a large screen aerial beamed at Guam and Saipan, a low stage at one end of the hall. Biggest job and one that will take another 2 or 3 weeks is a new roof, the Public Works office having decided that the tin one now in place, tho it's trim and well-laid, is too shot full of holes to be worth repairing and painting. The new one will be made of sheet-tin-covered 3/8” plywood side of large bomb boxes available in limitless quantity - kids unbolt them while one of the Nisei boys unsolders them with a blow torch. When we have enough, they will be laid like shingles Love you Warren
