Wilson College World War II Collection documents the experience of Wilson alumnae through correspondence, photographs, and memorabilia from the time. The Collection primarily features the correspondence between Eunice "Bobby" Carpen Johnston '42 and her husband, Warren, a language officer stationed in the Marianas and the materials of Elizabeth McGeorge Sullivan '38 who served as a WASP (Women Airforce Service Pilot)

Darling- As I may have mentioned to you, we are starting a geography course for the whole school on April 1st. Except for a too-advanced “World Economic Geography” published by the Armed Forces Service Institute, and my Nat'l Geographic Pacific Ocean map, we have absolutely no materials to work from. We expect to begin mainly with building up appropriate vocabulary, but in a month or so's time it will be very difficult to get along without books; Tel and I and some of the Nisei are writing home to see what we can get to put into a common pool. We want to concentrate on the Pacific Ocean (especially this) area, but ordinary standard grammar school geography textbooks should be of great assistance. Will you go to see the principal of the Carmel grammar school, explain our predicament, and ask if it would be possible for him to donate one copy (used is all right) of the book used by each grade? Tomorrow I'll get a form or letter which will give you permission to send the package airmail. I'll reimburse you for the expense. Good luck W.

295 [PAGES 1 and 2 TORN] My 18 - 71/2 to go. I may be out before that, and you may be sure, darling that I won't let slip any opportunity to do so. No airmail from you in 3 days - much too long. But I suspect most planes have been diverted to other purposes, and it's such a relief to know that the war is over (I still can't believe it, it hasn't sunk in yet) that I suppose I can bear to put up with resulting momentary inconveniences. Haven't heard from Chuck again and can't imagine why, but perhaps will soon; probably recent events have upset his plans, or the mail hasn't gone through regularly. The M.G. unit here had its first holiday (Capt. Dodds authorized the closing of all offices at their own discretion) since the assault and we gave the Nisei boys our jeeps and told them [pg 4] to go have fun somewhere (they did, fishing) but had to go up ourselves this morning. This afternoon, of course, I had my talk (about 2-3:30) and tonight we showed our regular Thursday movie. We would probably have cancelled in except that on Monday night the generator broke down and we didn't show one then. Thank you, sweetie, for the package I received today: strawberry jam, yummie (I have it to Drake, our best colored steward who takes especial care of me) to serve at breakfast tomorrow; the brownies, which I'll tackle in earnest tomorrow evening if I don't go to bed right after supper to make up for lost time; the china cement and the anchovies. I also received a case of Syrian [Dobrudja?] tobacco from Mother and Father, bless their hearts, and smoked a pipeful of it at the movie. 307 [Pg 1 MISSING] [pg 2] Seemed to enjoy the unique experience. They had to be back at their quarters promptly at ten o'clock, and told me with amusement about the traffic problem at that hour. I saw it: there are several MPs on duty to handle the steady stream of incoming jeeps. Since the B29 boys are largely at leisure now and these girls are free every afternoon and evening, they get out a good deal. Today, with Bert Gerow and Dan [Volkenaun?], I've been assigned to one of those nuisance jobs which crop up now and then: this time it's auditing the Trade Store Accounts. Since it hasn't been done before, I suppose we shall have to set up the system as well. I love you, sweetie, and miss you more and more each day. Warren
