In the first chapter of this booklet we have tried to disclose the scriptural basis of the Female Diaconate. In the second chapter we give a comprehensive view of the Deaconess Motherhouse, as it has developed in the course of seven decades, especially in Germany. In the third chapter we want to introduce our friendly readers to the sisterhood. In the last chapter we give a short, general representation of the development and history of the deaconess work in the United States.

Counting only those institutions that are planned after and conducted in the spirit of the German originals, there are to-day, according to the latest statistics, more than seventy Deaconess Motherhouses in the world, with over 10,000 Sisters, engaged in 3,650 fields of labor. Motherhouses are found in Germany, Denmark, Sweden, Norway, France, England, Hungary, Switzerland, Finland, Russia, the United States, and since last year one in Australia; whilst the Sisters trained in these houses carry on their work of love and mercy in almost every part of the world.
